Distichiasis
DistichiasisDouble rows of eyelashes. The extra eyelashes grow from glands called the Meibomian glands and may protrude into the cornea, producing severe corneal abrasions. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Cornea The front part of the eye that acts as a window for the entrance of light rays. It is attached to the other outer coat of the eye, the sclera; the white part of the eye. The cornea provides a significant amount of focusing power for the eye (the rest is provided by the lens). Because it has many nerve fibers, an injury or foreign body causes significant pain and discomfort. Corneal Pertaining to the cornea, the clear front window of the eye that transmits and focuses light into the eye. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Distal A location farther from a point of reference. For example, the foot is distal to the knee, relative to the center of the body. Distance healing Healing in which people seek to help patients simply with the power of the mind. Distance healing can include anything from therapeutic touch -- in which practitioners, without touching their patients, try to alter their energy fields -- to praying for people who are ill. Distance healing is part of the practice of alternative medicine. Distention Bloating or swelling of the abdomen. Distractibility The inability to maintain attention, that is, the shifting from one area or topic to another with minimal provocation, or attention being drawn too frequently to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Dissect To cut apart or separate tissue as, for example, for anatomical study or in surgery. Also, an artery is said to dissect when its wall is torn, as in a dissecting aneurysm. Dissection The process of cutting apart or separating tissue as, for example, in the study of anatomy or in the course of a surgical procedure. Dissection, axillary Surgery in which the axilla (the armpit) is opened -- to "dissect" means to "cut apart" -- in order to identify, examine, and sometimes remove structures such as lymph nodes or other tissue for diagnosis or treatment. Dissection, neck Surgery in which the neck is opened -- to "dissect" means to "cut apart" -- in order to identify, examine, and sometimes remove structures such as lymph nodes or other tissue for diagnosis or treatment. A radical neck dissection involves removal of a tumor from the neck with an additional margin of apparently normal tissue of at least 2 cm, as well as removal of the lymph nodes from the neck. Distichiasis Diverticulitis, bleeding from Diverticular bleeding typically occurs intermittently over several days. Colonoscopy is usually performed to confirm the diagnosis and exclude bleeding from other causes. Thermal probes cannot be employed to stop active diverticular bleeding. Therefore, surgical removal of the bleeding diverticula is necessary for those with persistent bleeding. Diverticulitis, treatment of acute Antibiotics are usually needed. Oral antibiotics are sufficient when symptoms are mild. Liquid or low fiber foods are advised during acute diverticulitis attacks. In severe diverticulitis with high fever and pain, patients are hospitalized and given intravenous antibiotics. Surgery is needed for persistent bowel obstruction or abscesses not responding to antibiotics. Diverticulosis/diverticulitis and fiber High fiber diets help delay the progression of diverticulosis and, at least, reduce the bouts of diverticulitis. Diving injury An injury incurred from diving into water that is too shallow or has hidden hazards. These injuries may be to the head, neck, or spinal cord. Many diving injuries result when persons --predominantly males aged 15-25 years -- plunge into swimming pools or natural bodies of water such as rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. In one study, 15 cases of quadriplegia were reported. One resulted from a dive into a swimming pool; the other 14 cases resulted from dives into rivers, streams, lakes, or oceans. Only three of these injured persons had objective evidence of the depth of the water at the time of injury, Most of the divers had underestimated it. Dizygotic twin A twins who have shared a common uterine environment with its twin but is due to a different fertilized ovum. Dizygotic twins are also called fraternal twins.
