Deafness, congenitalLoss of hearing present at birth. Congenital deafness contrasts to acquired deafness which occurs after birth.

Congenital
Present at birth.
Deafness
A general term for the complete or partial loss of the ability to hear from one or both ears. Deafness may result from ear diseases; vestibulocochlear nerve diseases; or brain diseases.
Acquired
"Anything that is not present at birth but develops some time later. In medicine, the word ""acquired"" implies ""new"" or ""added."" An acquired condition is ""new"" in the sense that it is not genetic (inherited) and ""added"" in the sense that was not present at birth. For example, AIDS (the acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is an acquired form of immune deficiency due to the acquisition of HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus). An acquired mutation is a change in a gene that occurs in a single cell after the conception of the individual. That change is then passed along to all cells descended from that cell. Acquired mutations are involved in the development of cancer."

DCIS
Ductal carcinoma in situ. A precancerous condition characterized by the clonal proliferation of malignant-looking cells in the lining of a breast duct without evidence of spread outside the duct to other tissues in the breast or outside the breast. DCIS is clearly the precursor (forerunner) of invasive breast cancer. This is evident from the sharing of clonal chromosome changes by DCIS and adjacent invasive cancers. In other words, invasive breast cancer evolves from DCIS. Also called intraductal carcinoma.
DDH (developmental dislocation of the hip)
The abnormal formation of the hip joint in which the ball at the top of the thighbone (the femoral head) is not stable within the socket (the acetabulum). The ligaments of the hip joint may also be loose and stretched.
De Lange syndrome
A relatively common birth defect syndrome with multiple malformations and mental retardation of unknown origin.
De Musset sign
Rhythmic nodding or bobbing of the head in synchrony with the heart beat, a sign of aortic insufficiency - incompetence of the aortic valve with aortic regurgitation. The causes include syphilitic aortitis, rheumatic fever, and aortic aneurysm

Death

Death rate
The number of deaths in the population divided by the average population (or the population at midyear) is the crude death rate.
Death rate, infant
The number of children dying under a year of age divided by the number of live births that year. The infant death rate is also called the infant mortality rate.
Death, black
The black plague or the plague. In 14th century Europe, the victims of the "black plague" had bleeding below the skin (subcutaneous hemorrhage) which made darkened ("blackened") their bodies. The black death swept recurrently through Europe, killing half its population in the middle of the 14th century.
Debilitate
To impair the strength or to enfeeble. A chronic progressive disease may debilitate a patient. So may, temporarily, a major surgical procedure. In both cases the weakness is pervasive. Weakness in an arm or leg following the removal of a cast is not debility.
