Dandruff
DandruffLittle scales or flakes of dead skin on the scalp. Also called seborrheic dermatitis. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Skin Skin is an organ of the integumentary system; which is composed of a layer of tissues that protect underlying muscles and organs. Skin is used for insulation, vitamin D production, sensation, and excretion (through sweat). Dermatitis Dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a skin irritation characterized by red, flaky skin, sometimes with cracks or tiny blisters. Dermatitis is extremely itchy, but scratching damages the fragile skin and exacerbates the problem so it is important for people with eczema to try to leave the area alone. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Dander Tiny scales shed from human or animal skin or hair. Dander floats in the air, settles on surfaces and makes up much household dust. Cat dander is a classic cause of allergic reactions. Dandy fever An acute mosquito- borne viral illness of sudden onset that usually follows a benign course with headache, fever, prostration, severe joint and muscle pain, swollen glands (lymphadenopathy) and rash. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Dysgeusia Perversion of the sense of taste. Dyssomnia Primary disorders of sleep or wakefulness characterized by insomnia or hypersomnia as the major presenting symptom. Dyssomnias are disorders of the amount, quality, or timing of sleep. Dextrose See Glucose. D and C Dilatation and curettage. A surgical procedure in which the uterine lining is removed by scraping. Dacryocystitis Inflammation of the sac that collects tears for drainage from the eye. Dandruff Debridement Removal of foreign material or dead tissue. Decalcification Loss of calcium from the bones or teeth. Decubitus A skin ulcer or bedsore. Degenerative joint disease A common form of arthritis in which tissue changes occur in one or more joints, such as swelling, lumps or cysts, or small pieces of loose bone and cartilage, which cause stiffness and pain.
