Coxsackievirus
CoxsackievirusA virus that can cause inflammation of the heart, brain or eye, or hand-foot-and-mouth disease. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Virus Ultramicroscopic infectious agent that replicates itself only within cells of living hosts; many are pathogenic; a piece of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) wrapped in a thin coat of protein. Inflammation A reaction to an injury to the body - by infection, chemicals or physical agents. The symptoms can be - depending on the location of the injury- redness, swelling, heat and pain. The purpose of the inflammation is to dilute and destroy the agent causing the inflammation. To do this, the immune system starts a cascade of actions that causes active cells to gather at the affected location. It is these cells and fluids that cause the redness, swelling, heat and pain. Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system. Brain "That part of the central nervous system that is located within the cranium (skull). The brain functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. It has two (right and left) halves called ""hemispheres."" " Eye The organ of sight. The eye has a number of components. These components include but are not limited to the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, macula, optic nerve, choroid and vitreous. Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Coxsackie B4 Virus An agent that has been shown to damage the beta cells of the pancreas in lab tests. This virus may be one cause of insulin-dependent diabetes. Costochondritis Inflammation of the cartilage-containing joints where the ribs join the breastbone (sternum). Coxsackievirus Cramp A painful muscle spasm. Craniotomy A surgical opening of the skull. Cranium The skull, or bony structure of the head, that protects the brain. Creatinine A substance formed from the making of creatine, an important nitrogen compound made in the body.
