Comedo
ComedoSee blackhead. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Blackhead A non-inflammatory acne lesion that is filled with excess oil and dead skin cells. Blackheads are also called “open comedomes” because the surface of the skin remains open. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Comedone Commonly know as black heads or white heads. This is where a hair follicle becomes plugged with sebum. When the lipid or sebum is exposed to the environment it is oxidized an turns black (black heads). When the follicle is closed and not exposed to the environment they are cream colored (white heads). Comedones The plural of comedo, the primary sign of acne, consisting of a dilated (widened) hair follicle filled with keratin squamae (skin debris), bacteria, and sebum (oil). Comedones may be closed or open. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Coccyx The tailbone. Cochlea The portion of the inner ear that senses sound. Cold An upper respiratory infection. Cold sore Herpes simplex infection of the lip. Colorado tick fever A viral illness spread by ticks. Characterized by headache, backache and fever that begins to break and then returns midway through the course of the illness. Comedo Communicable disease A disease spread through direct contact with an infected person or substance. Compress A dressing used to apply pressure or medicine to an area. Useful in applying heat or cold. Condom A sheath worn over the penis or inside the vagina (female condom) during intercourse to protect against pregnancy and disease. Conjunctiva The membrane lining the eyelids and covering the eyeball. Connective tissue Fibrous tissue with a wide variety of connecting and supporting functions within and between body organs.
