Clubfoot




Clubfoot

A congenital deformed or distorted foot. May respond to exercises and/or surgery.

Congenital
Present at birth.

Foot
The distal portion of the leg, upon which an individual stands and walks. It consists, in man, of the tarsus, metatarsus, and phalanges and the tissues encompassing them.

Surgery
Treating diseases or other medical conditions by operating on a patient to remove or repair parts of the body.

Club drug
A drug such as MDMA (Ecstasy), GHB, Rohypnol, ketamine, methamphetamine, and LSD that is used by young adults at all-night dance parties such as "raves" or "trances," dance clubs, and bars.

Club foot
A birth defect in which the foot or ankle is deformed. Twice as common in boys, and affecting one in every 400 births, club foot is treated with exercises, splinting, or, in severe cases, surgery.

Clubbing
The ends of the fingers and toes enlarge and bend inward; related to inadequate oxygen-rich blood supply. Often seen with congenital heart defects, but also seen in other conditions.

Chromosomal abnormalities
A problem with the chromosomes - either inherited or caused by a mutation - that leads to disorders such as Down syndrome. An estimated half of all first-trimester miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities too severe for the fetus to live.

Chronic
Ongoing or recurring. Chronic medical conditions include diabetes, epilepsy, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Circumcision
The surgical removal of the sheath of skin (called a foreskin) that covers the head of the penis.

Cleft lip and palate
A birth defect in which the lip or the lip and palate (roof of the mouth) do not grow together. Can be repaired with surgery, usually performed within the first year after birth.

Club foot

A person who shares parenting responsibilities for a child, such as a stepparent or unmarried partner.

The development of the brain and its functions -- including perception, memory, and knowledge.

Actions - such as thumb-sucking, hair-twirling, or blanket-carrying - that a baby or toddler uses to soothe himself.

Conception
When a sperm and egg join to form a single cell, usually in the Fallopiantubes. After joining, the fertilized egg travels into the uterus, where itimplants in the lining on its way to growing into an embryo and then a fetus.

Congenital heart problems
May include ventricular septal defect (a hole in the septum) and transposition of the great vessels, where the pulmonary artery and the aorta are reversed. May be corrected with surgery soon after birth, usually with a high rate of success.
