Chest pain
Chest painThere are many causes of chest pain. One is angina which results from inadequate oxygen supply to the heart muscle. Angina can be caused by coronary artery disease or spasm of the coronary arteries. Chest pain can also be due to a heart attack (coronary occlusion) and other important diseases such as, for example, dissection of the aorta and a pulmonary embolism. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Chest The area of the body located between the neck and the abdomen. The chest contains the lungs, the heart and part of the aorta. The walls of the chest are supported by the dorsal vertebrae, the ribs, and the sternum. Pain An unpleasant sensory or emotional experience primarily associated with tissue damage, or described in terms of tissue damage, or both. Angina A recurring pain or discomfort in the chest that happens when some part of the heart does not receive enough blood. It is a common symptom of coronary heart disease, which occurs when vessels that carry blood to the heart become narrowed and blocked due to atherosclerosis. Angina feels like a pressing or squeezing pain, usually in the chest under the breast bone, but sometimes in the shoulders, arms, neck, jaws, or back. Angina is usually is brought on by exertion, and relieved within a few minutes by resting or by taking prescribed angina medicine. Commonly called chest pain, heart pain or angina pectoris. Oxygen A chemical element essential for sustaining life. Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system. Muscle Tissue made up of bundles of long, slender cells that contract when stimulated. Artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body. Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. Spasm A condition in which a muscle or group of muscles involuntarily contract. Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the arms, legs, head, body and organs. Dissection The process of cutting apart or separating tissue as, for example, in the study of anatomy or in the course of a surgical procedure. Aorta The largest artery in the body and the primary blood vessel leading from the heart to the body. Pulmonary Pertains to lungs and respiratory system. Embolism The sudden blocking of an artery by a clot of material (embolus). The process of the formation of an embolus. Chickenpox rash Chickenpox is characterized by a rash, often the first sign of the disease. The rash of chickenpox develops in crops with raised red spots arriving first, progressing to blisters that burst, creating open sores, before crusting over. This process usually starts on the scalp, then the trunk (its area of greatest concentration), and finally the arms and legs. Any area of skin that is irritated (by diaper rash, eczema, sunburn, etc.) is likely to be hard hit by the rash. The rash is typically very itchy (pruritic).
