Carotene
The fat-soluble pigment in carrots, tomatoes and other vegetables, egg yolks, milk fat and other substances that can be converted in the body to vitamin A.

Carotene, beta
An antioxidant, a substance that protects cells against oxidation damage which, it is thought, can lead to cancer. Beta carotene is converted, as needed, to vitamin A.

Carotenemia
Temporary yellowing of the skin due to excessive beta carotene in the diet. The offending substance, beta carotene, is an antioxidant (a substance that protects cells against oxidation damage) and is converted by the body to vitamin A.

Carotenoid
One of a group of compounds that includes beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin which are converted to vitamin A and are referred to as provitamin A carotenoids. The sole known role of carotenoids is to act as a source of vitamin A in the diet. Fruits and vegetables are the main source of carotenoids in the human diet.

Carotid Angiography (carotid angiogram, carotid angio)
An invasive imaging procedure that involves inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the arm or leg, and guiding it to the carotid arteries with the aid of a special x-ray machine. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter so that x-ray movies of your carotid arteries (the arteries that supply your brain with oxygen-rich blood) are taken.

Carotid arteries
The major arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain.

Carotid artery
A major artery in the neck that supplies blood to the head and brain.

Carotid Artery
A vessel that supplies the brain with oxygenated blood.

Carotid Artery Disease
A progressive disease which involves the buildup of fatty material and plaque in the carotid arteries; can lead to a stroke.

Carotid body
A small "body" of tissue rich in capillaries, at the spot the carotid artery branches in the neck, containing cells that sense the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in blood and from which messages are dispatched to the medulla (in the brain) to regulate the heart rate.

Carotid Bruit
An abnormal sound, heard when using a stethoscope to listen to blood flow in the carotid artery. This is the main artery in the neck; it brings blood to the head.

Carotid Duplex Ultrasound
An imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to view the blood vessels in the neck to and determine the presence of narrowing in the carotid arteries.

Carotid endarterectomy
Surgical removal of deposits (which cause restricted blood flow, or are the source of an embolus) in the walls of the carotid artery.

Carotid stenosis
Abnormal narrowing of the carotid artery, often a preamble to a stroke.
