CXCR4
CXCR4A chemokine receptor found on a wide variety of cells that serves as the coreceptor for HIV. HIV strains that use CXCR4 are referred to as X4 viruses. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Chemokine One of a large group of proteins that act as lures and were first found attracting white blood cells. The chemokines are involved in a wide variety of processes including acute and chronic types of inflammation, infectious diseases, and cancer. Chemokines may lure cancer cells and help determine the sites to which cancer cells spread by metastasis. Receptor A molecule that recognizes a unique hormone. Once that hormone is bound to the receptor, the information carried by the hormone can now exert its biological action. HIV Human immunodeficiency virus. Species of lentivirus, subgenus primate lentiviruses (lentiviruses, primate), formerly designated T-cell lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV). It is acknowledged to be the agent responsible for the acute infectious manifestations, neurologic disorders, and immunologic abnormalities linked to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. CXCR4 A chemokine receptor found on a wide variety of cells that serves as the coreceptor for HIV. HIV strains that use CXCR4 are referred to as X4 viruses. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Cutting for the stone The removal of kidney or bladder stones by surgery. The procedure is today called lithotomy. CVA Cerebrovascular accident. CVC Commonly used abbreviation for a Central Venous Catheter, a catheter (tube) that is passed through a vein to end up in the thoracic (chest) portion of the vena cava (the large vein returning blood to the heart) or in the right atrium of the heart. CVS 1. Chorionic villus sampling, a procedure for first-trimester prenatal diagnosis. 2. Cyclic vomiting syndrome, also known as abdominal migraine. CWD Chronic wasting disease. CXCR4 Cyanide "Poisoning with cyanide, a rapidly acting, potentially deadly chemical that can exist as a colorless gas, such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or cyanogen chloride (CNCl), or a crystal form such as sodium cyanide (NaCN) or potassium cyanide (KCN). Cyanide sometimes is described as having a ""bitter almond"" smell, but it does not always give off an odor, and not everyone can detect this odor. Cyanide is also known by the military designations AN (for hydrogen cyanide) and CK (for cyanogen chloride). " Cyanotic Showing cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes due to not enough oxygen in the blood). Cycle, cell The sequence of events within the cell between mitotic (cell) divisions. Cyclic citrullinated peptide A circular peptide containing the amino acid citrulline. Abbreviated CCP. Autoantibodies directed against CCP are found in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Cyclic vomiting syndrome A syndrome characterized by episodes, bouts, or cycles of severe nausea and vomiting that last for hours or even days and alternate with longer asymptomatic periods (with no symptoms). The cause of the syndrome is unknown. Each episode is similar to previous ones and tends to start at about the same time of day, last the same length of time, and present the same symptoms at the same level of intensity. Episodes of CVS can be so severe that a person may have to stay in bed for days, unable to go to school or work. Because other common diseases and disorders can also cause cycles of vomiting, people with the syndrome may initially be misdiagnosed. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for CXCR4.
