COPD




COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Any disorder that persistently obstructs bronchial airflow. COPD mainly involves two related diseases: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Both cause chronic obstruction of air flowing through the airways and in and out of the lungs. The obstruction is generally permanent and progresses (becomes worse) over time.

Chronic
Ongoing or recurring. Chronic medical conditions include diabetes, epilepsy, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Pulmonary
Pertains to lungs and respiratory system.

Disease
Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus.

An inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes, causing a persistent cough that produces considerable quantities of sputum (phlegm).

Emphysema
Lung disease where the alveoli -parts of the lungs where gas is exchanged- have lost their elasticity. Breathing becomes increasingly difficult, and emphysema patients have to use other muscles to breathe out. The main cause of emphysema is smoking.

Obstruction
A blockage in the GI tract that prevents the flow of liquids or solids.

Lungs
The main respiratory organs in the chest where blood is oxygenated.

Cyproterone acetate
Cyproterone acetate is a progestin that also blocks the effect of androgens on the skin. It is very useful for the treatment of hirsutism. A rare side effect is liver problems. Cyproterone acetate is available in oral contraceptive pills (Diane® and Dianette®) and a brand name is Androcur®.

Cetrotide
Cetrotide is a gonadotropin releasing hormone that helps control hormonal responses in women's body affecting the development of eggs. Cetrotide is blocking the trigger effect of GnRH. This blocking action stops the premature LH surge in women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation before they begin. In doing so, this allows eggs to reach the level of development needed for fertilization.

Cushing's disease
Cushing's disease is also known as hyperadrenocorticism. It is a disease that results from an increase in corticosteroid secretion from the adrenal gland.

Communicable Disease
An illness due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products that arises through transmission of that agent or its products from an infected person, animal or inanimate reservoir to a susceptible host; either directly or indirectly through an intermediate plant or animal host, vector or the inanimate environment (synonym: infectious disease).

A specific CTD occurring as the result of compression on the median nerve, which travels through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Symptoms can include tingling and numbness in the hand, and loss of dexterity and strength in the hand.

Caffeine
A stimulating drug found in coffee, tea, and cola beverages. After a headache begins, caffeine may be helpful in aborting headaches, so it is widely used in combination drugs prescribed for relief of headache. Paradoxically, using caffeine to excess or too rapid withdrawal from caffeine, may cause headaches in some individuals.

Canadian prescriptions are a popular way for US citizens to obtain certain medications they can't normally get.

Chloracne
Rash characterized by many comedones that develops from exposure to chlorinated chemicals or herbicides.

Cocaine
Cocaine, from the leaves of the coca plant, is one of the most powerfully addictive drugs. Cocaine is distributed on the street in two main forms: cocaine hydrochloride, a white crystalline powder that can be snorted or dissolved in water and injected; and crack cocaine hydrochloride that has been processed with ammonia or baking soda and water into a freebase cocaine. These chips, chunks, or rocks can be smoked. Heavy use of cocaine may produce hallucinations, paranoia, aggression, insomnia and depression. Cocaine in powder-form is also called coke, snow, nose candy, flake, blow, big C, lady, white and snowbirds.
