Brace




Brace

A device used to support a body part, correct or prevent deformities, or control movement.

Brace, Milwaukee
One of the two main types of braces used to treat the lateral curve of the spine in scoliosis. This brace can be worn to correct any curve in the spine.

Devices used by orthodontists to gradually reposition teeth to a more favorable alignment

Brachial artery
The artery that runs from the shoulder down to the elbow.

Brachial neuritis
A neuropathy involving symptoms in an upper limb. Pain and weakness may be out of proportion to sensory abnormality. (Brachial plexus neuropathy, Neuralgic amyotrophy)

Brachial palsy

Brachial plexus
A network of spinal nerves that originates in the back of the neck, extends through the axilla (armpit), and gives rise to nerves to the upper limb. The brachial plexus is formed by the union of portions of the fifth through eighth cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve, all of which come from the spinal cord.

Brachial plexus palsy
Paralysis of the arm due to an injury to the brachial plexus, a network of spinal nerves that originates in the back of the neck, extends through the axilla (armpit), and gives rise to nerves to the upper limb. The brachial plexus is formed by the union of portions of the fifth through eighth cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve, all of which come from the spinal cord.

Brachial vein
A vein that accompanies the brachial artery between the shoulder and the elbow. The route of the brachial artery is from the shoulder down to the elbow whereas that of the brachial vein is in the reverse direction -- from the elbow back up to the shoulder.

Brachycephaly
A short head, one that is short in diameter from front to back.

Brachydactyly
Short, stubby fingers and toes.

Brachytherapy
Radiation treatment given by placing radioactive material directly in or near the target, which is often a tumor.

Brachytherapy, coronary artery
Local radiation treatment within an artery to the heart. Coronary artery brachytherapy has been used to reduce the recurrence of blockage (obstruction) of a coronary artery after successful treatment of a blockage of a stent. A stent is a tubular structure that is implanted inside of a coronary artery to keep it open, thereby preventing a heart attack.

Boil
A skin infection characterized by a localized buildup of pus.

Borrelia
A class of disease-causing bacteria that includes the organisms that cause relapsing fever and Lyme disease.

Botulism
An extremely dangerous form of food poisoning caused by the toxin of Clostridium botulinum.

Bovine
Having to do with cattle. For example, bovine insulin is insulin obtained from cattle.

Bowleg
A deformity of the legs in which the space between the knees is greater than normal.

Brace

Breech birth
A birth in which the feet or buttocks of the baby appear first through the birth canal.

Bronchiolitis
An infection of the bronchioles, the tiny air tubes in the lungs.

Bronchospasm
Contraction of the muscle in the walls of the bronchi.

Bronze diabetes
A disorder of iron metabolism resulting in iron pigment deposits in the skin and other body tissues that causes a change in skin color.

Bubo
A swollen, infected lymph node (especially in the groin). The node may enlarge enough that it begins to drain through the skin.
