Bowel
Bowel Another word for the small and large intestines. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Intestines See large intestine and small intestine. Also called gut. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Bowel disease, inflammatory A group of chronic intestinal diseases characterized by inflammation of the bowel -- the large or small intestine. The most common types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease. Bowel disorders and fiber High fiber diets help delay the progression of diverticulosis and, at least, reduce the bouts of diverticulitis. In many cases, it helps reduce the symptoms of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is generally accepted that a diet high in fiber is protective, or at least reduces the incidence, of colon polyps and colon cancer. Bowel movement Body wastes passed through the rectum and anus. Bowel prep The process used to clean the colon with enemas and a special drink. Used before surgery of the colon, colonoscopy, or barium x-ray. See also lavage. Bowel sounds The gurgling, rumbling, or growling noises from the abdomen caused by the muscular contractions of peristalsis, the process that moves the contents of the stomach and intestines downward. Bowen disease An early stage of skin cancer. Blood pressure cuff A device usually placed around the upper of the arm to measure blood pressure. Body mass index (BMI) Number, derived by using height and weight measurements, that gives a general indication if weight falls within a healthy range. Bone density Measure of the mass of bone in relation to its volume to determine the risk of developing osteoporosis. Borborygmi Rumbling sounds caused by gas moving through the intestines (stomach "growling"). Bowel Bowel movement Body wastes passed through the rectum and anus.
