Binocularity
BinocularityThe ability to focus upon an object with both eyes and create a single stereoscopic image. Binocularity requires highly convergent orbits. The evolutionary increases among primates in the degree of orbital convergence have been noted to correlate with the expansion of visual brain structures and, as a consequence, with the overall size of the brain. It is therefore thought that the evolution of brain size in primates was associated with visual specialization. Brain "That part of the central nervous system that is located within the cranium (skull). The brain functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. It has two (right and left) halves called ""hemispheres."" " Evolution The continuing process of change, especially in reference to natural selection. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Binocular Using both eyes at the same time. Binocular vision is the most important element of depth perception. Binocular diplopia See: Diplopia, binocular. Binocular disparity The difference in position of two retinal images of an object that do not fall on exactly corresponding retinal positions. Binocular field A receptive field which responds to a cells optimal stimulus if it is presented to either eye. Binocular overlap The segment of the optic array sampled by both eyes. Binocular rivalry Occurs when the two eyes are presented with different stimuli. Instead of seeing a summation of the two images, our perception switches from one image to the other. Binocular vision Vision performed with two eyes/sensors whose outputs are often used to extract relative stereoscopic depth. Binocular zone The central region of the visual field from which light enter both eyes. Binoptic stimulation When the same image is presented to each eye. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Biloma An encapsulated collection of bile within the abdomen. A biloma may form if there is bile duct disruption, as from a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. From bile + -oma (a tumor). Binaural Relating to both ears. Binge drinking The dangerous practice of consuming large quantities of alcoholic beverages in a single session. Binge drinking carries a serious risk of harm, including alcohol poisoning. Binge eating disorder An eating disorder characterized by periods of extreme over-eating, but not followed by purging behaviors as in most cases of bulimia. Binge eating can occur alone, or in conjunction with a lesion of the hypothalamus gland, Prader-Willi disorder, or other conditions. It can contribute to high blood pressure, weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. Treatment depends on the patient and the underlying disorder, but may include therapy, dietary education and advice, and medication. Binocular diplopia See: Diplopia, binocular. Binocularity Binucleate Having two nuclei. Binucleate cells are due to a defect in cytokinesis, the process by which two daughter cells separate at the completion of cell division. Bio- Prefix indicating living plants or creatures, as in biology, the study of living organisms. Bioarchaeology The use of a range of biological techniques on archaeological material in order to learn more about past populations. In bioarchaeology, one might isolate and amplify DNA from very old bones such as from the frozen body of the 9,000-year-old Ice Man who was found in the Italian Alps. Biochemical Relating to biochemistry, the application of the tools and concepts of chemistry to living systems. Biochemical aspirin resistance The inability of aspirin to produce an anticipated effect on one or more tests of platelet function, such as inhibiting the biosynthesis of thromboxane, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and causing a prolongation of the bleeding time. The rationale for this testing is the concern as to whether aspirin therapy can in a given patient help prevent a heart attack or stroke.
