Bends
BendsA condition that results from rapidly decreasing atmospheric pressure on the body. Symptoms include joint pain, chest pain, shortness of breath and coma. The condition may be fatal. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Condition The term "condition" has a number of biomedical meanings including the following: 1.An unhealthy state, such as in "this is a progressive condition." 2.A state of fitness, such as "getting into condition." 3.Something that is essential to the occurrence of something else; essentially a "precondition." 4.As a verb: to cause a change in something so that a response that was previously associated with a certain stimulus becomes associated with another stimulus; to condition a person, as in behavioral conditioning. Joint Where the ends of two or more bones meet. Pain An unpleasant sensory or emotional experience primarily associated with tissue damage, or described in terms of tissue damage, or both. Chest The area of the body located between the neck and the abdomen. The chest contains the lungs, the heart and part of the aorta. The walls of the chest are supported by the dorsal vertebrae, the ribs, and the sternum. Coma A sleep-like state; not conscious. May be due to a high or low level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Bacteriuria The presence of bacteria in the urine. Ballism Quick, jerking movements that occur in people with chorea. Barotrauma Injury caused by pressure differences between the atmosphere and the air-filled spaces in the body. The most common of these injuries are the ear and sinus blocks that can occur during air travel. Bartholin cyst A cyst caused by an infection of the glands on the vaginal wall. Bedsore An ulcer caused by chafing or by the pressure of the body against the bed. Bends Benign familial tremor An inherited disorder that causes a slow tremor in the hands, head and voice. It may affect only one side of the body, be worse when moving than when resting and worsen with age. Beriberi A deficiency disease caused by dietary insufficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Symptoms include general weakness and painful rigidity. Biceps A muscle having two heads. The most familiar is the large muscle in the front of the upper arm responsible for flexing the forearm. Bicuspid A tooth named for the two-pointed projections on the crown. Bifocals Eyeglasses with divided lenses.
