Bandwidth

Bandwidth

The ratio of the spatial frequencies at which half the maximum contrast sensitivity is obtained.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Contrast
"Short for ""contrast media."" Contrast media are X-ray dyes used to provide contrast, for example, between blood vessels and other tissue."

Sensitivity
1. The reciprocal of the minimum stimulus strength required for the stimulus to be detected reliably (1/threshold) May be related to noise and other mechanisms. 2. Physiologically measured sensitivity averaged over many stimulus/response cycles. A measure of gain. Noise free.

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Band, chromosome
One of the transverse bands produced on chromosomes by differential staining techniques. Depending on the particular staining technique, the bands are alternating light and dark or fluorescent and nonfluorescent.

Band, Q
A form of chromosome band, one of the bright and dull fluorescent bands seen alternating along the length of chromosomes under ultraviolet light after the chromosomes are stained with quinacrine. The Q in Q band stands for Quinacrine, an agent used as an antimalarial agent and, in the laboratory, as a fluorescent dye.

Banding of chromosomes
The treatment of chromosomes to reveal characteristic patterns of horizontal bands like bar codes. The banding patterns lend each chromosome a distinctive appearance so the 22 pairs of human nonsex chromosomes and the X and Y chromosomes can be identified and distinguished without ambiguity. Banding also permits the recognition of chromosome deletions (lost segments), chromosome duplications (surplus segments) and other types of structural rearrangements of chromosomes.

Bandirma Devlet Hastanesi
The Bandirma Devlet Hastanesi is a hospital in Balikesir, Turkey.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Breast pump
A device to extract milk from a mother's breasts so she can feed her infant later with a bottle. Pumps range from inexpensive manual models to powerful industrial-strength machines that can pump both breasts at the same time within a few minutes.

Breech position
When the baby's bottom or feet - rather than the head - face the mother's cervix as labor nears. Three to four percent of full-term babies are positioned this way.

Breech presentation
When the baby's bottom or feet - rather than the head - face the mother's cervix as labor nears. Three to four percent of full-term babies are positioned this way.

Bence-Jones protein
Dimers of immunoglobulin light chains in the urine of patients with multiple myeloma

Bandwidth

Barber pole illusion
The direction of motion of a diagonal grating pattern drifting behind a rectangular aperture depends upon the elongation of the aperture. The prevailing explanation is that the perceived direction of motion results from the integration of motion signals from grating terminators at the edges of the aperture. As a vertically elongated aperture has larger number of terminators with vertical trajectories, vertical motion prevails.

Benussi ring illusion
The addition of an intervening line can chance the perceived lightness of the two sides of a ring with uniform luminance.

Binding problem
If color, form, and motion are processed in separate areas of the brain, how/where is this information reassembled to create a single unified percept. (e.g. a purple box moving to the left).

Binocular disparity
The difference in position of two retinal images of an object that do not fall on exactly corresponding retinal positions.

Binocular vision
Vision performed with two eyes/sensors whose outputs are often used to extract relative stereoscopic depth.
