Banding of chromosomes

Banding of chromosomes

The treatment of chromosomes to reveal characteristic patterns of horizontal bands like bar codes. The banding patterns lend each chromosome a distinctive appearance so the 22 pairs of human nonsex chromosomes and the X and Y chromosomes can be identified and distinguished without ambiguity. Banding also permits the recognition of chromosome deletions (lost segments), chromosome duplications (surplus segments) and other types of structural rearrangements of chromosomes.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Chromosomes
Filaments of genetic material in every cell nucleus that are made up of genes and that transmit genetic information from one generation of cells to the next.

Chromosome
A structural unit within a eukaryotic nucleus that carries genes. A chromosome consists of a long, continuous strand of DNA and associated proteins.

SIMILAR TERMS

Band, chromosome
One of the transverse bands produced on chromosomes by differential staining techniques. Depending on the particular staining technique, the bands are alternating light and dark or fluorescent and nonfluorescent.

Band, Q
A form of chromosome band, one of the bright and dull fluorescent bands seen alternating along the length of chromosomes under ultraviolet light after the chromosomes are stained with quinacrine. The Q in Q band stands for Quinacrine, an agent used as an antimalarial agent and, in the laboratory, as a fluorescent dye.

Bannayan syndrome
A genetic disease characterized by macrocephaly (enlarged head), multiple lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and hemangiomas (benign blood vessel tumors). The macrocephaly occurs without enlargement of the cerebral ventricles. There is mild neurological impairment and postnatal growth retardation.

Bar chart
Proper term in mathematics for what is popularly called a bar graph. See: Bar graph.

Bar graph
A visual display using bars to represent the relative size of different categories of a variable, with each category or value of the variable represented by a bar, usually with a gap between the bars. A bar graph is often used to illustrate the major features of the distribution of data because it is an easier and quicker way to see and grasp the information. Bar graphs are frequently used in medicine. Also called a bar chart.
