Band, Q

Band, Q

A form of chromosome band, one of the bright and dull fluorescent bands seen alternating along the length of chromosomes under ultraviolet light after the chromosomes are stained with quinacrine. The Q in Q band stands for Quinacrine, an agent used as an antimalarial agent and, in the laboratory, as a fluorescent dye.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Chromosome
A structural unit within a eukaryotic nucleus that carries genes. A chromosome consists of a long, continuous strand of DNA and associated proteins.

Chromosomes
Filaments of genetic material in every cell nucleus that are made up of genes and that transmit genetic information from one generation of cells to the next.

Antimalarial
"A drug directed against malaria. The original antimalarial agent was quinine which took its name from the Peruvian Indian word ""kina"" meaning ""bark of the tree."" A large and complex molecule, quinine is the most important alkaloid found in cinchona bark. Until World War I, it was the only effective treatment for malaria. In fact, quinine was the first chemical compound to be successfully used to treat an infectious disease. "

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Band, chromosome
One of the transverse bands produced on chromosomes by differential staining techniques. Depending on the particular staining technique, the bands are alternating light and dark or fluorescent and nonfluorescent.

Banding of chromosomes
The treatment of chromosomes to reveal characteristic patterns of horizontal bands like bar codes. The banding patterns lend each chromosome a distinctive appearance so the 22 pairs of human nonsex chromosomes and the X and Y chromosomes can be identified and distinguished without ambiguity. Banding also permits the recognition of chromosome deletions (lost segments), chromosome duplications (surplus segments) and other types of structural rearrangements of chromosomes.

Bandirma Devlet Hastanesi
The Bandirma Devlet Hastanesi is a hospital in Balikesir, Turkey.

Bandwidth
The ratio of the spatial frequencies at which half the maximum contrast sensitivity is obtained.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS

Balloon angioplasty
Coronary angioplasty is accomplished using a balloon-tipped catheter inserted through an artery in the groin or arm to enlarge a narrowing in a coronary artery. Coronary artery disease occurs when cholesterol plaque builds up (atherosclerosis) in the walls of the arteries to the heart. Angioplasty is successful in opening coronary arteries in 90% of patients. 40% of patients with successful coronary angioplasty will develop recurrent narrowing at the site of balloon inflation.

Balloon tamponade
"A procedure in which a balloon is inflated within the esophagus or stomach to apply pressure on bleeding blood vessels, compress the vessels, and stop the bleeding. Used in the treatment of bleeding veins in the esophagus (esophageal varices) and stomach. The balloon used in the esophagus is shaped like a sausage while that in the stomach is rounded. Balloon tamponade is also called esophagogastric tamponade. The word ""tamponade"" is direct from the French. The French verb ""tamponner"" means to plug up."

Bambino
The little child who is the infant in swaddling, the symbol of pediatrics, sculpted by the Florentine artist Andrea della Robbia (1437-1528).

Bannayan syndrome
A genetic disease characterized by macrocephaly (enlarged head), multiple lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and hemangiomas (benign blood vessel tumors). The macrocephaly occurs without enlargement of the cerebral ventricles. There is mild neurological impairment and postnatal growth retardation.

Bar chart
Proper term in mathematics for what is popularly called a bar graph. See: Bar graph.

Bar graph
A visual display using bars to represent the relative size of different categories of a variable, with each category or value of the variable represented by a bar, usually with a gap between the bars. A bar graph is often used to illustrate the major features of the distribution of data because it is an easier and quicker way to see and grasp the information. Bar graphs are frequently used in medicine. Also called a bar chart.
