Balloon angioplasty
Balloon angioplastyCoronary angioplasty is accomplished using a balloon-tipped catheter inserted through an artery in the groin or arm to enlarge a narrowing in a coronary artery. Coronary artery disease occurs when cholesterol plaque builds up (atherosclerosis) in the walls of the arteries to the heart. Angioplasty is successful in opening coronary arteries in 90% of patients. 40% of patients with successful coronary angioplasty will develop recurrent narrowing at the site of balloon inflation. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Angioplasty A non-surgical procedure for treating diseased arteries. Catheter A thin, flexible tube that carries fluids into or out of the body. Artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body. Groin The region of the body where the thigh and lower abdomen meet. Disease Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus. Cholesterol A substance similar to fat that is found in the blood, muscles, liver, brain, and other body tissues. Plaque Soft sticky substance that accumulates on teeth; composed of bacteria and food debris due to inadequate dental hygiene. Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the arms, legs, head, body and organs. Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Ball-and-socket joint A ball-and-socket joint is one in which the round end of a bone fits into the cavity of another bone. The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint. Ballism Quick, jerking movements that occur in people with chorea. Balloon Angioplasty (Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty or PTCA) A specially designed balloon catheter with a small balloon tip is guided to the point of narrowing in the artery. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to compress the fatty matter into the artery wall and stretch the artery open to increase blood flow through the blood vessel. Balloon tamponade "A procedure in which a balloon is inflated within the esophagus or stomach to apply pressure on bleeding blood vessels, compress the vessels, and stop the bleeding. Used in the treatment of bleeding veins in the esophagus (esophageal varices) and stomach. The balloon used in the esophagus is shaped like a sausage while that in the stomach is rounded. Balloon tamponade is also called esophagogastric tamponade. The word ""tamponade"" is direct from the French. The French verb ""tamponner"" means to plug up." Balloon valvuloplasty Plastic surgery to repair a valve, especially a heart valve. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Balanoposthitis In the uncircumcised male, balanitis (inflammation of the glans, the rounded head of the penis) and posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin) usually occur together as balanoposthitis: inflammation of both the glans and foreskin. Balantidiasis The disease caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Balantidium. Balantidium A genus of protozoa with cilia that includes Balantidium coli (B. coli). B. coli is the largest protozoan and the only ciliate parasite to infect humans. The disease that B. coli causes is called balantidiasis. Clinical features, when present, include persistent diarrhea, occasionally dysentery, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Symptoms can be severe in debilitated persons. Baldness, patchy Patchy baldness. Also referred to as alopecia areata. Alopecia means baldness and areata means occurring in patches. This process typically begins with patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes progresses to complete baldness and even loss of body hair. The hair loss tends to be rather rapid and asymmetrical and is different than male pattern baldness. Ball-and-socket joint A ball-and-socket joint is one in which the round end of a bone fits into the cavity of another bone. The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint. Balloon angioplasty Balloon tamponade "A procedure in which a balloon is inflated within the esophagus or stomach to apply pressure on bleeding blood vessels, compress the vessels, and stop the bleeding. The French verb ""tamponner"" means to plug up." Bambino The little child who is the infant in swaddling, the symbol of pediatrics, sculpted by the Florentine artist Andrea della Robbia (1437-1528). Ban zhi lian See: Scutellaria barbata. Band, chromosome One of the transverse bands produced on chromosomes by differential staining techniques. Depending on the particular staining technique, the bands are alternating light and dark or fluorescent and nonfluorescent. Band, Q A form of chromosome band, one of the bright and dull fluorescent bands seen alternating along the length of chromosomes under ultraviolet light after the chromosomes are stained with quinacrine. The Q in Q band stands for Quinacrine, an agent used as an antimalarial agent and, in the laboratory, as a fluorescent dye.
