Aviophobia
Aviophobia Fear of flying. Also known as aerophobia or flight phobia. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Aerophobia "An abnormal and persistent fear of flying. Sufferers experience severe anxiety even though they usually realize that the flying does not pose a threat commensurate with their fear. Aerophobia also means an irrational fear of fresh air or drafts of air. Derived from the Greek ""aero-"", air or gas + ""phobos"", fear = literally, fear of air." Phobia An anxiety disorder that is characterized by an intense and, at least on the surface, irrational fear. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Agoraphobia Fear of being in situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing, or help might be difficult to obtain, in the event that one should have a panic attack or should feel an acute desire to leave. Such situations often include being in large crowds or “open spaces” (such as shopping malls or stadiums), using public transportation, driving on the freeway, eating in restaurants, or, in severe cases of agoraphobia, going anywhere outside one’s own home. Agoraphobia usually occurs in response to having panic attacks, but it can also develop without panic attacks. Allergic rhinitis Allergic rhinitis is a common allergic reaction that causes inflammation of the nose. Symptoms typically include sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, and an itchy nose. Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal or perennial. Anaphylactic shock A severe and sometimes life-threatening immune system reaction to an antigen that a person has been previously exposed to. The reaction may include itchy skin, edema, collapsed blood vessels, fainting, and difficulty in breathing. Aplastic anemia An uncommon disorder characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. It may occur as an inherited condition (see Fanconi's anemia) or, more often, the disease develops later in life. This form is called acquired aplastic anemia. It leads to a severe shortage of all types of blood cell causing tiredness, susceptibility to infection, and potentially serious problems with bleeding as a result of a deficiency in blood platelets. The acquired disease is usually the result of an autoimmune attack of lymphocytes against blood cell progenitors preventing normal blood cell formation. Aviophobia Addison's disease Addison's disease (also known as chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism) is a rare endocrine disorder. It is a disease that results from a decrease in corticosteroid secretion from the adrenal gland. Alopecia Areata A disorder in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing loss of hair on the scalp. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, progressive inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting spine and sacroiliac joints, causing eventual fusion of the spine. Complete fusion results in a complete rigidity of the spine, a condition known as bamboo spine. Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) A disorder of coagulation, and causes thrombosis in both arteries and veins, as well as recurrent miscarriage. It is due to the autoimmune production of antibodies against cell membrane constituents. Asentra A commercial name for sertraline hydrochloride, an orally administered antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type. Sertraline is used medically mainly to treat the symptoms of depression. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Aviophobia.
