APL
"Abbreviation for acute promyelocytic leukemia, a malignancy of the bone marrow in which there is a deficiency of mature blood cells in the myeloid line of cells and an excess of immature cells called promyelocytes. APL is due to a translocation (an exchange of chromosome material) between chromosomes 15 and 17 which is symbolized t(15;17). This translocation is not a mere marker of APL. It is the cause of APL."

Aplasia of the breast
A rare condition wherein the normal growth of the breast or nipple never takes place. They are congenitally absent. There is no sign whatsoever of the breast tissue, areola or nipple. There is nothing there.

APLS (antiphospholipid antibody syndrome)
An immune disorder characterized by the presence of abnormal antibodies in the blood associated with abnormal blood clotting, migraine headaches, recurrent pregnancy losses (repeat spontaneous abortions), and low blood platelet counts (thrombocytopenia). The abnormal antibodies are directed against phospholipids, fats that contains phosphorous.

APM1
Adipose most abundant gene transcript 1. (AdiPose Most abundant gene transcript 1 = APM1.) The APM1 gene encodes the hormone adiponectin.

APO-1
See: FAS gene.

APOA-I
Apolipoprotein A-I.

ApoA-I Milano
"A variant of apolipoprotein A-I identified in about 40 inhabitants of Limone sul Garde, a small town in rural North Italy, who had extraordinarily low HDL levels, levels so low that they were off the scale. Because HDL is the ""good"" cholesterol, it was expected that these people would have very high rates of heart disease. Instead, they seemed to be protected from heart disease and to enjoy longer lives than usual. The infusion of recombinant ApoA-I Milano-phospholipid complexes reportedly produces rapid regression of coronary artery atherosclerosis."

APOBEC3G
"A human protein that interferes with the replication of HIV by incorporating itself into virus particles and damaging the genetic material of the virus. The viral protein Vif can halt this process in two ways: (1) by binding to APOBEC3G and preventing it from incorporating into virus particles; and (2) by targeting APOBEC3G for destruction and almost completely eliminating it from the cell. APOBEC3G stands for apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like 3G."

ApoE
Abbreviation for apolipoprotein E, a gene that codes for a protein component of lipoproteins (complexes of fat + protein) that are normal constituents of blood plasma -- namely, chylomicrons, HDL (high density lipoprotein), LDL (low density lipoprotein), and VLDL (very low density lipoprotein).
