Aneurysm
Aneurysm A weakness in the blood vessel wall that balloons out and may rupture at some point. Aneurysms rarely cause symptoms before the rupture, unless they are large. They do not mimic the symptoms of migraine or cluster headache. It is vital to discover them before they rupture and have catastrophic consequences such as paralysis or death. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. Rupture A break or tear in any organ or soft tissue. Migraine A vascular headache associated with changes in the size of the arteries within and outside of the brain. A migraine begins when hyperactive nerve cells send out impulses to the blood vessels, causing constriction, followed by the dilation of these vessels and the release of prostaglandins, serotonin, and other inflammatory substances that cause the pulsation to be painful. Migraine is a genetic disorder that is inherited. A migraine causes mild to severe pain and lasts from 4 hours up to a week. Migraines usually occur 2 to 4 times per month. Cluster In epidemiology, an aggregation of cases of a disease or another health-related condition, such as a cancer or birth defect, closely grouped in time and place. The number of cases in the cluster may or may not exceed the expected number. This is determined by cluster analysis, a set of statistical methods used to analyze clusters. Headache Primary - includes tension (muscular contraction), vascular (migraine), and cluster headaches not caused by other underlying medical conditions. Secondary - includes headaches that result from other medical conditions. These may also be referred to as traction headaches or inflammatory headaches. Paralysis Inability to move parts of the body. Death 1. The end of life. The cessation of life. (These common definitions of death ultimately depend upon the definition of life, upon which there is no consensus.) 2. The permanent cessation of all vital bodily functions. (This definition depends upon the definition of "vital bodily functions.") See: Vital bodily functions. 3. The common law standard for determining death is the cessation of all vital functions, traditionally demonstrated by "an absence of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac functions." 4. The uniform determination of death. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Aneuploidy One or a few chromosomes above or below the normal chromosome number. For example, three number 21 chromosomes or trisomy 21 (characteristic of Down syndrome) is a form of aneuploidy. Aneurysm, abdominal "An aneurysm situated within the abdomen (belly). An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" See: Aneurysm, aortic." Aneurysm, aortic See: Aortic aneurysm. Aneurysm, arterial "An aneurysm involving an artery. As opposed to a venous aneurysm or a cardiac aneurysm. An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening.""" Aneurysm, arteriosclerotic See: Arteriosclerotic aneurysm. Aneurysm, atherosclerotic See: Atherosclerotic aneurysm. Aneurysm, berry A berry aneurysm is a small outpouching (aneurysm) that looks like a berry and classically occurs at the point at which a cerebral artery departs from the circular artery (the circle of Willis) at the base of the brain. Berry aneurysms often rupture and bleed. Also called a brain aneurysm. An aneurysm is a localized dilatation (widening) of a blood vessel (an artery or a vein) or the heart. At the area of the aneurysm, the wall is weakened, bulging, and at risk of rupture (breaking). Aneurysm, brain "An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" A brain aneurysm is a small aneurysm that looks like a berry and classically occurs at the point at which a cerebral artery departs from the circular artery (the circle of Willis) at the base of the brain. Brain aneurysms rupture frequently and bleed. Also called a berry aneurysm." Aneurysm, cardiac "Outpouching of an abnormally thin portion of the heart wall. An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" Heart aneurysms tend to involve the left ventricle because the blood there is under greatest pressure." Aneurysm, fusiform "An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" A fusiform aneurysm is shaped like a spindle. A fusiform widening of an artery or vein. The word ""fusiform"" comes from the Latin ""fusus"" meaning ""spindle.""" Aneurysm, miliary "An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" A miliary aneurysm is tiny like a millet seed. (Millet is a cereal grass. Its seed is about 2 millimeters in diameter). Miliary aneurysms tend to affect minute arteries in the brain and, in the eye, the retina." Aneurysm, racemose "An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening."" A racemose aneurysm looks like a bunch of grapes. From the Latin ""racemus"" meaning ""a cluster or bunch, particularly of grapes.""" Aneurysm, renal "An aneurysm involving the kidney. An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. At the area of an aneurysm, there is typically a bulge and the wall is weakened and may rupture. The word ""aneurysm"" comes from the Greek ""aneurysma"" meaning ""a widening.""" Aneurysm, saccular "An aneurysm is a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, vein, or the heart. Aneurysmal bone cyst A rare bone tumour which usually occurs in the teens and often in the spine. Locally destructive. Aneurysmal bruit A blowing sound heard over an aneurysm, a widening of a vessel. Bruit is French for noise. PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Allergy A major defense mounted by the body's immune system against normally harmless substances, or allergens, such as chemicals in pollen, food, bee stings, animal dander, or dust. An allergic reaction is the body's strong reaction to these substances in a person who is sensitive to them. Reactions range from mild to severe, and may include sneezing, a rash, or difficulty breathing (which can be fatal). Amputation Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. As a surgical measure, it is used to control pain or a disease process in the affected limb, such as malignancy or gangrene. Ataxia Ataxia is unsteady and clumsy motion of the limbs or trunk due to a failure of the fine coordination of muscle movements. The cerebellum is the center of the fine coordination of muscle movements, while the information emerging from it is carried to the muscles by the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, respectively. Therefore a disorder in either the spinal cord or in the peripheral nerves can cause ataxia. ADHD Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed and controversial mental disorders among children, and is increasingly recognized as afflicting adults as well. Its symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Autism A neurological developmental disability that results in limited cognitive abilities: the autistic individual is limited in ability to learn inductively from surrounding events. Social interactions and many kinds of conceptual learning can be strongly limited. At the same time, the autistic individual may be outstandingly good at some kinds of mental manipulations, such as, for example, arithmetical calculations. Aneurysm Agoraphobia Fear of being in situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing, or help might be difficult to obtain, in the event that one should have a panic attack or should feel an acute desire to leave. Such situations often include being in large crowds or “open spaces” (such as shopping malls or stadiums), using public transportation, driving on the freeway, eating in restaurants, or, in severe cases of agoraphobia, going anywhere outside one’s own home. Agoraphobia usually occurs in response to having panic attacks, but it can also develop without panic attacks. Allergic rhinitis Allergic rhinitis is a common allergic reaction that causes inflammation of the nose. Symptoms typically include sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, and an itchy nose. Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal or perennial. Anaphylactic shock A severe and sometimes life-threatening immune system reaction to an antigen that a person has been previously exposed to. The reaction may include itchy skin, edema, collapsed blood vessels, fainting, and difficulty in breathing. Aplastic anemia An uncommon disorder characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. It may occur as an inherited condition (see Fanconi's anemia) or, more often, the disease develops later in life. This form is called acquired aplastic anemia. It leads to a severe shortage of all types of blood cell causing tiredness, susceptibility to infection, and potentially serious problems with bleeding as a result of a deficiency in blood platelets. The acquired disease is usually the result of an autoimmune attack of lymphocytes against blood cell progenitors preventing normal blood cell formation.
