Anaplasia




Anaplasia

Characteristics of a cell (structure and orientation) that make it identifiable as a cancer cell. Malignant.

Cell
Fundamental structural unit of all life. The cell consists primarily of an outer plasma membrane, which separates it from the environment; the genetic material (DNA), which encodes heritable information for the maintainance of life; and the cytoplasm, a heterogeneous assemblage of ions, molecules, and fluid.

Cancer
Any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division; it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.

Malignant
Cancerous; life-threatening.

Anaphase
The stage in mitosis or meiosis during which the sister chromatids (mitosis) or homologous chromosomes (meiosis) separate and migrate toward the opposite poles of the cell.

Anaphia
The inability to feel touch. From the Greek prefix an, not + Greek haphe, touch = inability to (feel) touch. A person with anaphia is said to be anaptic.

Anaphylactic shock
A severe and sometimes life-threatening immune system reaction to an antigen that a person has been previously exposed to. The reaction may include itchy skin, edema, collapsed blood vessels, fainting, and difficulty in breathing.

Anaphylactoid purpura

Anaphylatoxin
Substance capable of releasing histamine from mast cells.

Anaphylaxis
Immediate hypersensitivity response to antigenic challenge, mediated by IgE and mast cells. It is a life-threatening allergic reaction, caused by the release of pharmacologically active agents.

Anaplasmosis
A tick-borne disease of cattle, sheep, and related ruminants caused by a microorganism called Anaplasma marginale and characterized by anemia and jaundice. Also called gallsickness and gall sickness.

Anaplastology
The art and science of restoring a malformed or absent part of the human body through artificial means. An anaplastologist makes prosthetic devices. From the Greek ana, again, + plastos, formed. See also: Prosthesis.

Anaprox

Anaprox ds
Anaprox ds is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) legal in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): naproxen sodium.

Anaptic
Suffering from an impaired sense of touch, (a state called anaphia) or tactile anesthesia. An anaptic person has anaphia (an, not + Greek haphe, touch = inability to (feel) touch.

Infection of the lungs due to aspiration (the sucking in of food particles or fluids into the lungs).

Aspiration, fine needle

Aspiration, joint
A procedure whereby a sterile needle and syringe are used to drain joint fluid from the joint. This is usually done as an office procedure or at the bedside in the hospital. The procedure is also known medically as arthrocentesis.

Aspirin resistance
"1. The inability of aspirin to protect a person from cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. This has been called clinical aspirin resistance. 2. The inability of aspirin to produce an anticipated effect on one or more tests of platelet function. This has been called biochemical aspirin resistance, although the tests are not all truly biochemical in nature. See: Biochemical aspirin resistance; Clinical aspirin resistance."

Accessible
Refers to tumors that can be approached by a surgical procedure; tumors that are not deep in the brain or beneath vital structures. Inaccessible tumors cannot be approached by standard surgical techniques.

Anaplasia

Artifact
Something artificial, a distortion that does not reflect normal anatomy or pathology, not usually found in the body. For example, in radiology, the appearance on an x-ray of a surgical metal clip that obscures the clear view of an anatomical structure.

Ataxic gait
Walking that is clumsy, uncoordinated.

Autologous
Coming from the same individual, as opposed to being donated by another individual.

Axial
Position as it relates to the CNS. Intra-axial is within the CNS; extra-axial is outside the CNS.

Asplenia
The absence of a spleen or one that functions. (The spleen can be functionally destroyed, as occurs in patients with sickle cell disease.) The spleen, an organ located in the upper left part of the abdomen near the stomach, produces lymphocytes, filters blood, serves as a major reservoir for blood, destroys blood cells that are aged, and has an important function in the filtering, phagocytosis (engulfing) and removal of bacteria from the bloodstream. Asplenic patients run a significantly increased risk of severe sepsis (bloodstream infection), especially from the pneumococcus bacterium.
