Amnion
AmnionA thin membrane surrounding the fetus during pregnancy. The amnion is the inner of the two fetal membranes (the chorion is the outer one). It contains the amniotic fluid. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Membrane A flexible layer surrounding a cell, organelle (such as the nucleus), or other bodily structure. The movement of molecules across a membrane is strictly regulated in both directions. Fetus The stage of human development from 10 weeks' gestation until birth. The membranes will either rupture spontaneously during labor or be ruptured to speed up labor. Chorion The outermost of the two membranes surrounding the embryo/fetus, part of which forms the fetal portion of the placenta. Amnioreduction The removal of large volumes of amniotic fluid by amniocentesis. Amniotic fluid Clear liquid that surrounds and protects the fetus throughout pregnancy. Amoxicillin is also used in treating urinary tract infections, skin infections, and gonorrhea. The brand names are Amoxil, Polymox, and Trimox. A generic version is available.
