Albumin
AlbuminA water-soluble protein found in milk, egg, muscle, blood and many vegetable tissues and fluids. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Protein Any of a group of complex organic compounds which contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and usually sulfur, the characteristic element being nitrogen. Proteins, the principal constituents of the protoplasm of all cells, are of high molecular weight and consist essentially of combinations of a-amino acids in peptide linkages. Twenty different amino acids are commonly found in proteins, and each protein has a unique genetically defined amino acid sequence which determines its specific shape and function. Their roles include enzymatic catalysis, transport and storage, coordinated motion, nerve impulse generation and many others. Egg The mature female reproductive cell. Muscle Tissue made up of bundles of long, slender cells that contract when stimulated. Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Albuginea Tough white fibrous tissue. The tunica albuginea of the testis, for example, is the layer of dense whitish inelastic tissue that surrounds the testis. Albumen "The white of an egg, the part of the egg from which meringues are made. Albus in Latin is white. Not to be confused with ""albumin"" which is the main protein in human blood and the key to the regulation of the osmotic pressure of blood." Albuminuria More than the normal amount of albumin in the urine. Albumin is the predominant protein in human blood and it is the key to the regulation of the osmotic pressure of blood. It is normal to have some albumin in urine. But too much albumin indicates that protein is leaking through the kidney. Albuminuria can mean many things. For example, albuminuria may be a sign of significant kidney disease or it may simply be a sequel of vigorous exercise. Albuminuria is a form of proteinuria. Albuterol Albuterol is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) legal in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): albuterol . Albuterol sulfate Albuterol sulfate is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) legal in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): albuterol sulfate . Albuterol sulfate hfa Albuterol sulfate hfa is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) legal in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): albuterol sulfate . PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Adenovirus One of the viruses that cause the common cold. ADH Antidiuretic hormone. One of the hormones produced by the pituitary gland. A shortage of this hormone causes increased loss of body fluids through the kidneys. Aerobic Requiring the use of oxygen. Exercise that conditions the heart and lungs by increasing the efficiency of oxygen intake by the body. Airway The passage by which air enters and exits the lungs. Albino A person with albinism. Albumin Aldosteronism A condition resulting when the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone, which regulates fluids and salt in the body. Alimentary Having to do with food or nutrition. The alimentary tract is the digestive tract. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency Congenital lack of an enzyme that leads to cirrhosis of the liver and obstructive lung disease. Altitude sickness A potentially fatal illness caused by being at altitudes high enough to reduce the amount of oxygen available to the body. Alveoli The sacs in the lungs at the ends of the smallest airways where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in the blood. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for Albumin.
