Aerobic
AerobicRequiring the use of oxygen. Exercise that conditions the heart and lungs by increasing the efficiency of oxygen intake by the body. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Oxygen A chemical element essential for sustaining life. Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system. Lungs The main respiratory organs in the chest where blood is oxygenated. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Aerobic capacity The body's ability to process oxygen. It is a combination of lung capacity, the size of the capillaries, the pumping action of the heart, and transfer of oxygen from red blood cells to target tissues. Aerobic exercise Exercise with a low enough intensity to facilitate adequate oxygen transfer to the muscle cells so that no buildup of lactic acid is observed. This type of exercise is useful for reducing insulin levels and lowering blood glucose. Aerophagia A condition that occurs when a person swallows too much air; causes gas and frequent belching. Aerophobia "An abnormal and persistent fear of flying. Aerophobia also means an irrational fear of fresh air or drafts of air. Derived from the Greek ""aero-"", air or gas + ""phobos"", fear = literally, fear of air." Aerotitis Middle ear problems due to changing atmospheric pressures, as when a plane descends to land. The problems include ear pain, ringing, diminished hearing and, sometimes, dizziness. The word aerotitis (pronounced aer-o-tit-is) is compounded from aer- + otitis meaning inflammation of the ear. Adenovirus One of the viruses that cause the common cold. ADH Antidiuretic hormone. One of the hormones produced by the pituitary gland. A shortage of this hormone causes increased loss of body fluids through the kidneys. Aerobic Airway The passage by which air enters and exits the lungs. Albino A person with albinism. Albumin A water-soluble protein found in milk, egg, muscle, blood and many vegetable tissues and fluids. Aldosteronism A condition resulting when the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone, which regulates fluids and salt in the body. Alimentary Having to do with food or nutrition.
