Adverse event (AE)




Adverse event (AE)

Any untoward medical occurrence in a patient or clinical investigation subject administered a pharmaceutical product and which does not necessarily have a causal relationship with this treatment. An adverse event (AE) can therefore be any unfavourable and unintended sign (including an abnormal laboratory finding), symptom, or disease temporally associated with the use of a medicinal (investigational) product, whether or not related to the medicinal (investigational) product. Clinical
That which can be observed in patients. Research that uses patients to test new treatments, as opposed to laboratory testing or research in animals.

Event
A set of outcomes. Cardiovascular events might include a heart attack and gastrointestinal events a GI bleed. The use of the term "event" in medicine comes from probability theory.

Sign
An objective manifestation of a pathological condition. Signs are observed by the examiner rather than reported by the affected individual.

Abnormal
Not normal. Deviating from the usual structure, position, condition, or behavior. In referring to a growth, abnormal may mean that it is cancerous or premalignant (likely to become cancer).

Symptom
A subjective manifestation of a pathological condition. Symptoms are reported by the affected individual rather than observed by the examiner.

Disease
Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus.

When a doctor or nurse listens to the chest or abdomen, adventitious sounds are those that are normally not heard coming from the chest or abdomen."

When a doctor or nurse auscults (listens to) the chest or abdomen, adventitious sounds are those that are normally not heard coming from the chest or abdomen. The word ""adventitious"" comes from the Latin ""adventicius"" meaning ""foreign, strange, extraneous, coming from abroad or from outside."" This, in turn, comes from the verb ""advenire"" meaning ""to come to"" or ""to arrive."" Other English words that stem from ""advenire"" include ""adventure,"" ""avenue,"" and the medical term ""adventitia."""

Adverse effect
A harmful or abnormal result. An adverse effect may be caused by administration of a medication or by exposure to a chemical and be indicated by an untoward result such as by illness or death.

Adverse event
In pharmacology, any unexpected or dangerous reaction to a drug.

Adverse reaction
In pharmacology, any unexpected or dangerous reaction to a drug. An unwanted effect caused by the administration of a drug. The onset of the adverse reaction may be sudden or develop over time. Also called an adverse drug event (ADE), adverse drug reaction (ADR), adverse effect or adverse event.

Allergy testing

Audit (of a clinical trial)
A systematic and independent examination of trial-related activities and documents to determine whether the evaluated trial-related activities were conducted, and the data were recorded, analysed and accurately reported according to the protocol, standard operating procedures (SOPs), good clinical practice (GCP), and the applicable regulatory requirements.
