Acuity, visual




Acuity, visual

"The clarity or clearness of the vision, a measure of how well a person sees. The ability to distinguish details and shapes of objects; also called central vision. The word ""acuity"" comes from the Latin ""acuitas"" = sharpness."

Activities of daily living (ADLs)
The things we normally do in daily living including any daily activity we perform for self-care (such as feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming), work, homemaking, and leisure. The ability or inability to perform ADLs can be used as a very practical measure of ability/disability in many disorders.

Activity, drug
A measure of the physiological response a drug produces in the body. A less active drug produces less response (and visa versa).

Acu-
A combining form indicating a relationship to a needle. As in acupuncture. From the Latin acus meaning needle.

Acuity, visual

Acupressure
The application of pressure on specific points on the body to control symptoms such as pain or nausea. Similar in concept to acupuncture but without needles.

Acupuncturist
A person skilled in the practice of acupuncture, who may or may not be credentialed by a national accrediting body.

Acustimulation
Mild electrical stimulation of acupuncture points done to control symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

Acute bacterial prostatitis
Inflammation of the prostate gland of sudden (acute) onset due to bacterial infection. The symptoms include chills, fever, pain in the lower back and genital area, body aches, burning or painful urination, and the frequent and urgent need to urinate. The urinary tract is infected, as evidenced by the presence of white blood cells and bacteria in the urine. Treatment is with antibiotics. The prostate, a small organ about the size of a walnut, is below the bladder (where urine is stored) and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). The prostate normally produces a fluid that becomes part of the semen.
