ASAT
ASATAnemia, sideroblastic, and spinocerebellar ataxia. See: Pagon syndrome. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Anemia Anemia is a condition in which a deficiency in the size or number of erythrocytes (red blood cells) or the amount of hemoglobin they contain limits the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and the tissue cells. Most anemias are caused by a lack of nutrients required for normal erythrocyte synthesis, principally iron, vitamin B-12, and folic acid. Others result from a variety of conditions, such as hemorrhage, genetic abnormalities, chronic disease states or drug toxicity. Ataxia Ataxia is unsteady and clumsy motion of the limbs or trunk due to a failure of the fine coordination of muscle movements. The cerebellum is the center of the fine coordination of muscle movements, while the information emerging from it is carried to the muscles by the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, respectively. Therefore a disorder in either the spinal cord or in the peripheral nerves can cause ataxia. Syndrome A grouping of signs and symptoms, based on their frequent co-occurrence, that may suggest a common underlying pathogenesis, course, familial pattern, or treatment selection. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS-------------------------------------- Artificial nose See: Nasal prosthesis. Artificial pacemaker A device that uses electrical impulses to regulate the heart rhythm or to reproduce that rhythm. An internal pacemaker is one in which the electrodes into the heart, the electronic circuitry and the power supply are implanted (internally) within the body. Artificial pancreas A machine that constantly measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood and, in response to an elevated level of glucose, releases an appropriate amount of insulin to lower the level into the normal range. In this respect, the machine functions like a pancreas. Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase See:AANAT. ASA (drug caution code) Abbreviation on a medication that indicates it contains acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). This special caution code is intended to be a warning for patients with specific medical conditions. If you see it or another possible caution code on a prescription, talk to your pharmacist about it before using the medicine. While not a part of the historical heritage of ancient prescription abbreviations, drug caution codes provide very valuable warnings. ASAT Ascariasis "Infection with Ascaris lubricoides, the intestinal roundworm, the most common worm infection in humans. Ascaris eggs are found in the soil. Infection occurs when a person accidently ingests (swallows) infective ascaris eggs. Once in the stomach, larvae (immature worms) hatch from the eggs. The larvae are carried through the lungs then to the throat where they are then swallowed. Once swallowed, they reach the intestines and develop into adult worms. Adult female worms can grow over 12 inches (4.8 cm) in length. Adult male worms are smaller. Adult female worms lay eggs that are then passed in feces; this cycle takes between 2 and 3 months. Adult worms can live 1 to 2 years. " Ascaris The intestinal roundworm, a worm that lives in the small intestine. Infection with ascaris is the most common worm infection in humans. It is termed ascariasis. Ascending aorta The ascending aorta is the first section of the aorta, the largest artery in the body. The ascending aorta starts from the left ventricle of the heart and extends to the arch (the bend) of the aorta. The right and left coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle arise from the ascending aorta. The ascending aorta is an arbitrary anatomic entity. The aorta is one continuous conduit that stems from the left ventricle of the heart to carry blood to most of the body. The ascending aorta is, however, a hallowed and convenient division of the aorta. Ascending pathway A nerve pathway that goes upward from the spinal cord toward the brain carrying sensory information from the body to the brain. In contrast, descending pathways are nerve pathways that go down the spinal cord and allow the brain to control movement of the body below the head. Ascus An elongated spore case containing the spores of certain fungi including yeast. We thank you for using the Medical Glossary to search for ASAT.
