ARBAngiotensin II receptor blocker. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Angiotensin A family of peptides (smaller than proteins) that act as vasoconstrictors to narrow blood vessels. Receptor A molecule that recognizes a unique hormone. Once that hormone is bound to the receptor, the information carried by the hormone can now exert its biological action. Sufferers from arachnophobia experience undue anxiety even though they realize the risk of encountering a spider and being harmed by it is small or nonexistent. They may avoid going barefoot and may be especially alert when taking showers or getting into and out of bed. ARB Arbitration agreement The patient waives the right to sue the doctor and, instead, submit any dispute to arbitration. Arbitration agreements are legal and binding. The arguments in their favor are that, for patients, the case can be settled faster and more money can go to them (not the lawyer) and for doctors, it often means that they can get a discount on their malpractice insurance if the majority of their patients sign such an agreement. Arboviral encephalitis Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) caused by infection with an arbovirus, a virus transmitted by a mosquito, tick or another arthropod. Infection of vertebrates, including humans, occurs when an infected arthropod feasts upon them for a blood meal. Arc eye condition experienced by welders who do not use adequate eye protection. The intense ultraviolet light emitted by the arc causes inflammation of the cornea (keratitis). Arc eye is a form of photokeratitis. See: Photokeratitis. Arch, aortic See: Aortic arch.
